Every house has some level of electromagnetic fields (EMF). They come from wiring, appliances, WiFi routers, smart meters, power lines and mobile phone masts. A House EMF Survey measures these fields, so you know what is actually around you instead of guessing.
What Is a House EMF Survey?
A House EMF Survey is a check of the electromagnetic fields inside and around a home. A specialist uses calibrated equipment to measure three main things:
Some surveys also check for dirty electricity, which is electrical noise on the wiring caused by electronic devices.
Why Measure Room by Room?
EMF levels are often very localised. A bedroom that shares a wall with the electrical panel can read very differently from a room at the other end of the house. For this reason, a good House EMF Survey takes readings in each room and pays extra attention to where people spend the most time, such as bedrooms, living areas and desks.
Who Might Want One?
What Does the Report Include?
A useful report should explain which sources were found, the readings for each room, and how they compare with recognised guidelines. It should also give practical suggestions, such as moving a router, repositioning a bed or desk, or addressing a wiring issue.
What a Survey Cannot Do
A House EMF Survey measures fields. It cannot diagnose medical symptoms or determine their cause. It also helps to know that different guidelines exist. International limits, such as those from ICNIRP, focus on established short-term effects, while Building Biology guidelines are more cautious and aimed at sleeping areas. A good surveyor will explain which standard is being used.
Simple Steps You Can Try First
For most sources, levels drop quickly with distance, so small changes can make a real difference.
Is It Worth It?
For many people, the main benefit is clarity and peace of mind. Results are often unremarkable, but if something does stand out, you will know where it is and what to do about it. Choose a surveyor who uses calibrated equipment, explains the results in plain English, and avoids dramatic health claims.
